Cristiano Ronaldo is set to earn over $200 million during his time at Al-Nassar football club after agreeing to take on a World Cup ambassador role. Saudi Arabia is expected to make a bid to host the 2030 World Cup and Ronaldo will take part in it. The 37-year-old football player has become the highest earning player in the world, beating all previously set records. Yet, the contract and athlete are already receiving backlash from critics and fans.

But there’s a bigger picture to this transfer, Saudi Arabia hasn’t only made a 37-year-old player the highest paid player in history – they’re also bending religious laws for him and his girlfriend. In Saudi Arabia, only married couples are allowed to live together. In an extraordinary move to meet his demands, the government has allowed them to live in a $10.5M pent house, despite their marital status.

Ronaldo has played for clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester United, Juventus and Sporting CP during his career. He is the leading goals scorer in the UEFA Champions League and holds a record as a five-time winner. Given his accomplishments, the Saudi Arabian league is not much of a challenge for the athlete. Ronaldo has yet to make his Al Nassar debut since making the move. He was handed a two game suspension by the FA for smashing an Everton’s fan’s phone back in April. He is halfway through his ban.

Ronaldo’s debut with the Saudi Arabian football team will come against his rival Lionel Messi. Saudi Arabian All-Star XI is set to take on Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Riyadh Super Cup on January 19.
