On September 27th, after 146 days, the second longest strike in Hollywood by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) finally ended. Yet, SAG-AFTRA, the union that represents actors, will meet next week for negotiations. “The WGAW Board and WGAE Council also voted to lift the restraining order and end the strike as of 12:01 am PT/3:01 am ET on Wednesday, September 27th. This allows writers to return to work during the ratification process, but does not affect the membership’s right to make a final determination on contract approval,” said the WGA.
In this negotiation writers’ minimum pay will immediately increase by 5%, then 4% in May of 2024, and then 3.5% the following year. They also gained protection against AI, meaning anything written by artificial intelligence will not be considered source material.
Streaming crevices have accepted all conditions, and the writers’ compensation based on streaming will increase by 18% to $100,000. The companies have also pledged to be transparent about how many hours programs were streamed.
Even if the strike is officially over, the contracts with the studios have not been renewed.
Some of the most streamed shows that will be back in production are Stranger Things Season 4, Euphoria, Game of Thrones, Grey’s Anatomy, Wednesday, and many more.
